On the right sidebar, you'll see a section with followers. Please follow the blog, as it not only lets everybody know you are part of the community but will help us pick up more readers.

ALSO: I have learned how to enable threaded comments for this blog---do people want that? Then we don't need to refer back to comment numbers but rather can reply directly to an existing comment. Let me know if you'd prefer threaded comments or to leave it the way it is now.

  1. Great to see this blog up and going so quickly. Was disappointed to see the blog on BR discontinued.

Threaded comments are the way to go. Makes discussions easier and less confusing.

  2. I'm in favor of trying the threaded comments method, as long as we can change our mind down the road if we choose to.

  3. What John & Red said goes for me as well

  4. I'd vote for keeping comments sequential. It's easier to follow the conversation that way in my opinion.

  8. Yeah it's not working yet--not sure if I'll get it working or not.

  9. Yes to threaded comments!!!

  10. I actually like sequential comments, because if I go back to check a blog post later and see that there are 4 or 5 new comments, I know just to go to the end, instead of having to hunt through the entire conversation again. But that's just me.

  11. I vote to keep the sequential comments, the big reason is what 10 said above, but it also makes it difficult to follow if you are interested in one "topic" when another tangent has started in a new direction, which happens all the time in this great blog (maybe the single best thing about this blog). It is awkward when you are reading something that looks like

    Topic 1
    comment
    comment
    comment
    -new Topic 2
    -comment
    -comment
    -comment
    old topic 1 comment
    etc.

That is how the they do it over at MLB trade rumors and I dont like it, even though you may be reading something with 100 comments, when comment 101 comes in you have no idea where it is.

  12. It also looks like every time anyone has pasted a link its not working, maybe you could give some idiot proof (Autin proof) instructions on how to make the links work.

    ReplyDelete
  13. topper, can you show me an example?

    ReplyDelete
  14. To insert a link, go here:

    http://help.edublogs.org/2009/08/01/writing-links-in-comments/

Scroll down the the section "Here is the HTML you use to write links"

You just have to put in the < with the letter a, just like it shows you there. You can also simply paste the web address just like I did above in this comment.

  15. I don't have a website. How do I do Name/URL without a URL?

(This is BSK by the way)

    ReplyDelete
  16. @15 BSK,

Just don't enter a URL. Your name will still appear, but it's black, not orange like the cool kids... Just like mine.

On a side note, I tried to subcribe to new posts with My Yahoo and it said it was unable to load the content. Just FYI.

  17. I vote to try threaded comments. I didn't care much for it at MLB Trade Rumors, but I'd be interested to see how it works here.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'll stick with straight numbered comments for now--it did seem to work pretty well at B-R, and the counterarguments made here are pretty convincing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Look at this example:

    this example

This comments has 3 responses directly referring to it, however, response 1 evolves into 9 more, then response 2 has 11 comments, then finally comment 3. So by the time you get to comment 3 you have no idea what it is talking about since it is referring to something 20 repsonses above so you have to go back.

Also, copying and pasting links is something from the 1900s and should be used as a last resort in these modern times. Also having to use HTML is cumbersome and outdated.

  20. Sorry I was asking for an example of links not working.

  21. sorry,

this must be a blogger thing, its annoying that it doesnt know to just turn these into links

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, blogger doesn't automatically make http addresses into active links. You need to cut and paste it into your browser, or when you leave a comment, put in the HTML to make it into a link.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No problem though, I guess the offense is down in this blog a little bit also.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't love either threaded or sequential posts. My favorite is when you can click a single button to quote a previous post. I know this can be done via HTML, but that is too complicated for this fool. NOt sure if that can be replicated here, but that would be my ultimatel preference. Otherwise, I'm on board with whatever gets more people posting. The conversation will be the ultimate draw and I'll work with whatever system is in place. As long as their isn't comment moderation... that drags dialogue to a halt.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I might installed a more advanced comment widget that can do what you're talking about, BSK, but we'll see. For now, what he have at the moment is certainly sufficient.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The convention that evolved at B-Ref Blog of referring to the comment you are replying to by its number (so you would address your comment to @17 or #17) was about as low-tech as you can get and I thought actually worked pretty well. Personally, I find the nested comments system at, for example, the SB Nation sites, to be ungainly to read and use.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @23, Andy. If you are looking to insert links inside your posts (as opposed to one of us commenting), go to blogger dashboard, and in the edit toolbar (just about in the middle) there's an icon for links. The click the icon, paste the link in, and name it. It will appear in the text of your post. But you probably knew that already.

And sorry about the Moderate Moderator-still working out the kinks on my end.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Topper, all, Blogger accepts all simple HTML commands. You just need to do the "a ref" etc. to make a line of text have a clickable link, like / for bold, etc.

On comments, sequential is fine for me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. sequential, please!

So glad to this up so fast. Thanks Andy, et al.

  30. Regarding adding my info to the followers section: What info would that reveal exactly (i.e., would this reveal my e-mail address)? I'd prefer it reveal my name only. Happy to help either way, I think, but I'm curious to know more about properly setting this up. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Matt, you can set that in your profile. I don't share my email address or even my full name.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Andy-

Is there a way to enable to the site "remember" who we are? I'm finding that I have to repeatedly enter my alias. I'm using Name/URL, which might be the reason why and, if it is, I'm okay with it (for primarily work purposes, I try to avoid having any official linkage to what I post on the web, as innoccuous as it may be). But, if it can "remember" us, another point in the quickly amassing total you and this blog have in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can anybody else answer BSK's question at #32? I have been emailed the question a few times as well.

It's been years since I signed up for this, but I think your best bet is to make a new Google identity, and on there put your name as whatever you want your screen name to be, and then when you log in here, it shows up that way.

The Google account can be, for example, your gmail account (or if you don't have one, you can just make a new Gmail account for the purposes here.) Set your display name as whatever you want (mine is "Andy"), choose NOT to display your email address if you wish, and you're all set. You can even use an existing Gmail account--just make your display name whatever you want, etc. You can also upload a profile pic and it will show up next to your name when you post.

    ReplyDelete
  34. BSK, I know you have a gmail account since I've contacted you that way before. I think you just need to sign in to that account, and post a message--and then click on your name on your message. It will take you to your profile page, where you can change the options as I just described above. It might show your email address or real name for a minute before you update your profile, but your info will be updated as soon as you update your profile.

    ReplyDelete
  35. BSK ... I would think it would "remember" you otherwise, UNLESS your browser, whichever one you're using, is set to "private browsing." Then, it won't.

    ReplyDelete
  36. For anyone who may not know, apparently it helps to have a Google Account to be among the blog's official "followers." (Other accounts may make it possible, too.) No problem, I figured everything out.

I think I am the first Honus here. :)

  37. Wahoo! 36 may live on. If it could be deleted, great. If not, no biggie.

  38. Trying to figure out how to get the avatar to post . . .

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's got to be your profile pic.

I could probably use a little help from anybody out there who is really experienced with Blogger--got some questions about some advanced template stuff, RSS issues, etc. Let me know if you think you can help.

  40. Following via email and Twitter!

And switching from my "DaveZ" moniker on BBR (not that I'm famous or a popular poster) to my Google ID...Dakota Prairie Dogs. This my my APBA BBW baseball league name...and I maintain mudvilleconfederacy.com which is our league historical website...not spam, no advertising there. Check it out and if interested on getting on our waiting list (we're a 20 team current year league) email me at apbadogs@verizon.net

  41. A couple suggestions:

Show "recent posts" on the sidebar, so if an old thread (eventually we'll have old threads here, right?) should get resurrected, people will know and could go back to reply. (I guess maybe you would be aware of that if you follow the RSS feed? But I don't do that and have no interest in trying to set one up.)

Also, show more entries on each page. It looks like only 5 are there now, before being pushed to the next page.

Doing either or both of these will keep threads from dying after a day or two.
