Jerry Crasnick reports that the Padres have traded Mat Latos to the Reds for Edinson Volquez, Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal and Brad Boxberger.
I like San Diego's end in terms of talent, but especially in terms of names. They get:
-- the only "Yasmani" and the only "Grandal" ever to play organized ball;
-- the only "Edinson" and the only "Volquez" ever to play in the majors; and
-- the only "Yonder" and the only "Alonso" (first or last name) ever to play in the majors.
To balance the uniqueness of the first three, Brad Boxberger is -- just like his dad, Rod -- a mid-sized RHP who attended U.S.C. after turning down the first team who drafted him, winding up as a 1st-round pick 3 years later. Rod Boxberger never got past AA, done in by a career 0.77 SO/BB ratio. Son Brad so far has 203 Ks in 154 IP; last year he averaged 13.5 SO/9 with a 0.97 WHIP in 62 IP at AA and AAA. They are the only "Boxbergers" in the B-R database.
Meanwhile, the Reds' acquisition is merely the 2nd "Mat" to play in MLB. Mat Gamel, the Brewers' backup 3B, beat Latos to the Show by a year.
