The Royals have just acquired Jonathan Sanchez from the Giants for Melky Cabrera.
I think this trade is a triumph for the Royals. Sanchez is coming off a disappointing year and Cabrera is coming off what is nearly certain to have been his career-best season. It's a classic case of selling one guy (Cabrera) high to buy low on another guy who is down.
I'm not saying that Sanchez is necessarily going to bounce back next year, but he had a short 2011 where control was his biggest problem. He still struck out 9.1 batters per 9.
Melky Cabrera, meanwhile, posted a way better season than he ever has before and still has a career OPS+ of just 93. Even if he maintains his good play, I'll take Sanchez, who has a reasonable shot at being a good #2 or #3 starter.
