- At JT's suggestion, I've added a "recent comments" widget to the sidebar. It shows the 20 most recent comments, so you can check there if you want to see if new threads have been revived.
- I'm playing around with ads--I'll probably be moving them around a lot.
- We've started with a pretty big bang with more than 6,000 hits in our first couple of days.
- I've also increased the number of posts that appear on the front page.
- You probably already noticed that I changed the main site banner. It's a pretty cool logo, right? Do you want it on a T-shirt? (I'm serious.)
- I'm relying on you, the core readers who came over from B-R, to publicize this blog--please post about it on other sites and make sure you are a follower on the widget at the right.

the t-shirt idea sounds pretty cool, you guys might want to check out something like cafe-press. i few other sites that i frequent go through them and they offer a good quality selection of items.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's exactly what I was thinking about. Rather than set up a straight donation thing, it seems cooler to offer some logo stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnybody see anything here they'd like with the HHS logo?
Andy, "HHS" is a common acronym for Department of "Health and Human Services", so be careful about presentation of your placement
ReplyDelete(told you I was a political junkie)
Cool but you could field a graphic look that doesn't necessarily look like home depot and be a huge hit

I really like the logo and stenciled name on the page header. I would probably order a cap and t-shirt.
ReplyDeleteI plus-1-ed the site for my Google+ feed. (I have about a dozen Cards fans in one circle.)
ReplyDeleteAndy, I don't find the "recent comments" very useful since you can't see which thread they refer to. So the context is lost. I like something Tango has at the Book Blog. On the right of each page is a list of the time of the most recent comment on the 20? threads that most recently had comments. If a thread doesn't show up there you know it has not been commented on recently.
ReplyDeleteNew site is excellent! Thanks so much. Any plans to start a Facebook page? That's the best way for me to see when a new post is up.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with kds that it would be good to see what thread has been revived. I don't know what it's showing now. All I see is "Recent Comments" and it's blank underneath.
ReplyDeleteOh weird, after posting that I now see the recent comments. Yeah, it would be better to change the format on that if possible.
ReplyDeleteMy first comment here: Dump the DH. Glad to have you back after all those...hours.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I'm somewhat limited on what I can add, as Blogger is less flexible than, say, Wordpress. When we migrate to a real site, I'll definitely do a Wordpress-based installation and then can make all these things the way we want them.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, I am still looking for help from any Blogger wizards out there--you gotta really be familiar with template modification, etc.
And regarding #10, I have always had the same problem with various Blogger widgets. I think it's a fundamental bug in their system (another reason for migrating once we are making a little cash.)
I am going to change the comments thing now to something at least a little better.
I think I am going to migrate to DISQUS, a different sort of comment application that can be used here on blogger. It seems a lot better and much more flexible. You can subscribe to comments on any individual thread, and all the comments are threaded on each post, so you can reply to comments directly. You can also opt to show comments by most recently posted, so you won't miss a reply to an earlier threaded comment within the same post. There are also lots of tools that are easy to use, including a "recent comments" widget that shows which post the comments came from.
ReplyDeleteI expect to implement this later today---I am running a test right now to make sure that existing comments can be imported.
Well I've hit a wall with DISQUS, which is that you can't hide your full name if you log in with Google or Facebook or whatever. Frustrating. Trying to find an alternative. It's a shame because it's an awesome tool otherwise.
ReplyDelete#14: With Disqus, you just need a Disqus login to hide your real name, correct? MLBTR uses Disqus, doesn't it, and when I post there it is as bluejaysstatsgeek.
ReplyDeleteAs for what would I buy with the logo, I looked at the mug options, and didn't see what I'm looking for. I'm surprised, with all the stats geeks out there needing their caffeine fix it is so hard to fine a "captain's mug", a mug with a really wide base that is nearly tip-proof - very handy when working beside a computer all day.
ReplyDelete#15, this is what I was thinking of as an option---it would require people to register with DISQUS, which takes just a second apparently--and then it opens up a lot of cool features like having threads emails to you, etc.
ReplyDelete#16, take a look around and see if you can find such a product available from one of the other sites like cafe press, and I'll make it available.
