Welcome to High Heat Stats

There is life after the Baseball-Reference.com blog...

After nearly 4 and a half years, that blog has run its course so I'm moving things over here. What can you expect? More of the same, for the most part. At least initially we will be running the same sort of content you saw on the B-R blog.

Some notes as we move forward:

  • Right now, my goal is to bring over as much of the audience as possible from the old blog. Please let folks know that we are here, and please comment early and often on our posts so we can move the lively discussion to this new site.
  • John Autin will be on board as a writer here, as well. I haven't set him up yet but will do so shortly. I am in the process of talking to other folks as well.
  • Within the next couple of weeks, I will be adding advertising and probably also a PayPal donation link here. We need some basic monetization to survive.
  • If this blog is successful, eventually I will move it off Blogger and onto its own domain.
Glad to have you on board!

  2. Great, I just signed up for the RSS feed on my phone, works fine.

Is there anyway to number the comments in order to refer back to them?

  3. Working on that now, topper, and thanks for coming over.

  4. Hey...

Nice place you have here. I forgot to bring my house warming gift.

  5. Ask and ye shall receive--comments are now numbered.

  6. Welcome, Andy! Can't wait to see what's to come!

  7. I'm glad this has been set up. (Typing as my stats class is doing a quiz!)

  8. Also, please feel free to post any other wishlist items and I will work on them. Obviously it was a fair amount of work just to get this blog up today (with the snazzy logo) so bear with me as we get things formatted.

  9. I have heard of blogspot but never really used it before. I just signed up through my gmail, and I am publicly following this blog. When I first did follow anonymously is gave me an error also.

Are you going to show all the people following this blog? It would be interesting to see how many there are.

And a big request, is there a way to disable having to do that verification thing by typing some letters before every post?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I will put up the followers widget.

I can turn off word verification, but that opens the possibility of a lot more spam. I'll turn it off and see what happens.

  11. It would be awesome if you could set up a twitter account and post when there's a new blog post, just like the b-r blog did.

Either way, thanks for setting this up and undertaking it....

  12. I'll work on that, should be easy.

  13. The colors are so played. And the template...oh lord, your feng shui is all fouled up. I don't know if I can be seen in such an establishment.

  14. testing to see if my photo shows up.

Also, do you think Sean could directly link to this from the bbref homepage, in the old upper left corner?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'll feng up your shui, JT.

Sean has given me the OK to make a new post about this blog---just waiting til we get a bit more content.

  16. Hey Andy -- any chance the tables you post from B-R will be sortable in the way they were on the B-R site? Or will that not be possible in this brave new world?

  17. Excellent to see the group reassembling.

  18. "We're not dead yet! Think I'll go for a walk...."

So how come most comments have a link to their Blogger profile, but I can't figure out how to do that?

    Sincerely resenting all new technology,

  19. All right! Glad to be here.

And to see other regulars here.

  20. Hey, I like the logo, too, no matter what Johnny Twisto says! :) Looks like Goedel, Escher, Bach.

  22. Welcome Back! That was a long 48 hours or however long the blog was gone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Working on #17.

JA, you can make an account and profile. Let me know if you can't figure it out. It's not strictly necessary, though.

  24. Thanks for setting this up! I hope it fills the void.

  25. Hey, I've not yet listened to it, but Yahoo Sports' Devil Ball Golf blog interviews ...

Ozzie Smith about Tony La Russa! This could be fun, eh? http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/blog/devil_ball_golf/post/Devil-Ball-Golfcast-79-Ozzie-Smith?urn=golf-wp6672

  27. The comments seem really delayed. I got here first time around 4-4:30 and it showed about ten. Now I see 24 posted before 4 and about half were definitely not here when I was on. Anybody else seeing this?

Thanks to Andy, and everyone else who has put the forth the effort to keep this blog going!

  31. Hey Andy! Thanks for this.

Can't wait to discuss 1975 Topps Fred Lynn Rookie!

  32. We will definitely be featuring some cards here.

  33. I was joking, earlier this week, about Ryno in red, but Mozeliak maybe isn't. http://socraticgadfly.blogspot.com/2011/11/i-was-joking-about-ryno-to-stlcards.html

  34. Andy;

Don't worry about the B-R bloggers not coming to this site. We are all so addicted to the blogs that we would be unable to function without them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not sure what you mean, Richard--that they'll all definitely come over here?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Good to see you are starting this, and good luck to you.

Wow, I don't check out the B-R blog for a few days and look what goes down!

As for requests, I want to see HoF polls again -- I really missed those this year, and there are plenty of good ones left to do.

Given that this isn't a paid gig for you guys anymore (yet), I suppose I should offer to submit some for your approval.

    ReplyDelete
  37. #36

I can't see how they can avoid it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Blogger has built-in polling as a widget, should be easy to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well done fellas... may the flow of information continue.

  40. Very glad to see this blog set up. Lots of thanks to Andy, John and Raphy (and all of the other regular commenters who write about this stuff way better than me).

    ReplyDelete
  41. I dunno about this yet. Feels like 'Cheers' closed and everybody had to go to Clavin's mother's house to get a beer.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks, Andy. Great to see this online so soon. Thanks to John and Raphy, too.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Voomo, I can't say you're wrong.

But let's find out. Maybe Mrs. Clavin secretly had a well-stocked basement all those years, and things work out ok. If we're lucky, even Al Rosen will show up.

  44. @Johnny 45: Please don't tell me Cliff Clavin and Al Rosen are related.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Guys, great job. Make sure to remind everybody of the existence of this blog next March... A lot of MLB fans will shift their attention to the NFL / NCAA / NBA seasons in the coming months, and you don't want to get lost in the shuffle.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Andy, many thanks for this.

(And feng shui be damned, as a Giants fan, I'm OK with the color scheme around here.)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Voomo, we're going to have basically the same writers doing the same thing. It may feel different, but that's really only perception. Let's work on bringing over as much of the audience as we can, and eventually we'll get this thing onto its own site and looking more professional. But the content is the key thing.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Would be nice if you could comment on a comment. Really don't like the format where it's all one long page and it's hard to tell what some of the comments are referring to without scrolling up and down repeatedly.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Glad to see there's a new place in town...

    ReplyDelete
  50. @49
Andy, of course. I trust the process. That was humor. I tend to think that I am funny.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Gadfly/46, Al Rosen (a different one) played the old man at Cheers (check the clip).

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ahh, Johnny/53, I forgot all about that

    ReplyDelete
  53. Glad to see the blog will live on...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Gadfly, #21: I like the logo, too . . . Looks like Goedel, Escher, Bach.

Let's dedicate the HHS logo to three, um, non-pitchers who played during the 1951 season: Gaedel, Usher, Mauch.

I want to use the acronym GUM for something specific to this site (maybe a GUM Ball award?), but I'm not quite sure how.

  55. Thank you! I was so sad to hear about the B-R blog going away. Best of luck with this new blog.
